HYALURONIC ACID. WHAT IS IT? WHAT FUNCTION DOES IT PERFORM AND WHAT ARE ITS BENEFITS?
Hyaluronic acid is a bi-polymer and a glycosaminoglycan. It was first secreted from the hyaloid membrane of the eye, hence its name (hyalos is Greek for “glass”). Hyaluronic acid is found in connective, epithelium nerve, and cartilage tissue. It is the key component of the articular fluid, which acts as “biological lubricant”. It combines with other molecules to form units able to retain water, which is critical to the resilience of tissue. Furthermore, HA has been found to possess a set of antimicrobial properties. These unique features (such as the ability to retain water in tissue to maintain its resilience, as well as the antimicrobial effect) have stirred an interest in researchers, resulting in a wide range of medical and cosmetological applications – HA now is used as an ingredient in various creams, lotions, and lipsticks, as well as in subcutaneous injections to fill in wrinkles.

HYALURONIC ACID IN TOOTHPASTE – IS IT POSSIBLE? WHAT FUNCTION DOES IT PERFORM THERE?
Hyaluronic acid in oral hygiene is a new thing in Lithuania, yet overseas it has already found a popular application as a toothpaste ingredient. Hyaluronic acid has a moisturising, anti-inflammatory effect and makes tissue more resistant to harmful outside factors, soothes irritated skin and mucous membrane. All these properties are vital to keep the mucosal lining of the mouth healthy. The hyaluronic acid in toothpaste is identical to that found in human body, and therefore it has no adverse or toxic effect and is safe to use.

WHEN CAN YOU USE TOOTHPASTE THAT CONTAINS HYALURONIC ACID?
We highly recommend hyaluronic acid toothpaste to people who experience dryness of the mouth and have a sensitive mouth lining. It is also suitable for daily use to adults because it is extremely refreshing and leaves the mouth feeling nice and clean. Because it contains 1136 ppm fluoride, we do not recommend it to children under 7.

WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL CAUSES BEHIND THE DRYNESS OF THE MOUTH LINING?
The dryness of the mouth can be caused by a plethora of factors. As often as not, dryness is the side effect of various drugs, such as painkillers, blood-pressure medicine, antidepressants, diuretics, appetite suppressants, and so on. The dryness of the mouth can lead to a poorer quality of life, too. You get an unpleasant feeling in your mouth, a difficulty to talk, eat, and swallow, your feeling of taste alters. That is why proper oral hygiene becomes critical, as this type of people is more susceptible to tooth decay. We recommend that such patients should use toothpaste with hyaluronic acid. Trials have shown that people who clean their teeth with hyaluronic acid toothpaste experience a lower degree of mouth dryness. On top of that, a high content of fluoride helps reduce the risk of tooth decay.

WHAT MAKES FLUORIDE AN IMPORTANT INGREDIENT OF TOOTHPASTE? WHAT IS THE RECOMMENDED CONTENT OF FLUORIDE FOR ADULTS AND CHILDREN?
Fluoride makes enamel more resistant to acid that occurs in the mouth cavity due to the action of different microorganisms as carbohydrates are broken down. It is also involved in the remineralisation process, reduces the microorganism fermentation activity, and prevents plaque from attaching itself into the surface of the tooth. For children under 7, the recommended content of fluoride in toothpaste is 500 ppm. For adults, the recommended quantity is between 1,000 and 1,500 ppm. However, your dentist will consider the specific condition of your teeth to recommend using toothpaste with a higher or lower fluoride content.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MINT OIL IN TOOTHPASTE?
Mint oil helps combat bad breath. After you brush your teeth with toothpaste that contains this oil, your breath will stay minty-fresh for a prolonged period of time.

NATURAL INGREDIENTS IN TOOTHPASTE. IS IT REALLY THAT IMPORTANT?
People’s care for ecology and natural products increases by the day. Many seek products that are made from organic, natural ingredients. “Ecodenta” offers an excellent alternative to synthetic toothpaste, because as much as 97 percent of its ingredients are organic or naturally occurring substances, their effectiveness proven with scientific tests and trials.

IS TOOTHPASTE ALONE ENOUGH TO ENSURE PROPER ORAL HYGIENE? WHAT GOOD IS THERE IN USING MOUTHWASH?
My experience shows that, unfortunately, it is but the minority of patients that clean their teeth very well. And even though everyone knows how this should be done right, during check-ups I find hard-to-reach places coated with soft scurf. That is where mouthwash comes in. As a rule, mouthwash contains fluoride, which minimises the risk of tooth decay, substances that mitigate tooth sensitivity, and their various plant-derived ingredients and essential oils sooth inflammation of the mucosal lining and help maintain your breath fresh.
